The COST Action REMINDNET (CA22138)
There are thousands of abandoned mines across Europe, and many of these sites continue to pose environmental and social risks. To address these challenges, the COST Action REMINDNET (CA22138) has been launched, bringing together more than 90 experts from over 30 European Union countries under one platform.
The REMINDNET initiative covers a wide spectrum of activities, ranging from old tailings and waste dumps to contaminated groundwater and abandoned mining areas. Its goal is the rehabilitation, sustainable management, and innovative reuse of mining districts across Europe.
Key features that make REMINDNET stand out include:
• Collaboration among geologists, engineers, economists, social scientists, and policymakers
• The creation of a comprehensive Europe-wide mining legacy database
• Harmonisation of legal frameworks and risk management practices
• A strong focus on education, stakeholder engagement, and open access to knowledge
Officials state that these efforts will make a significant contribution to protecting communities, ecosystems, and future land use across Europe.
