Mine Closure and Rehabilitation Seminar

At the request of Roland Berger, a consultant for SGS, the Saudi Arabian Geological Survey, training on mine closure and rehabilitation was provided to Saudi geologists in Istanbul between May 12 and 23, 2025, through SAHARA Consulting and Training. A field trip was organized to visit mining sites and rehabilitation areas in the Şile region. The trip took place on May 16, 2025, the fifth day of the seminar, organized by Mr. Adnan GEREDELİ, President of SERHAM, and guided by Mr. Emrah KUTLUATA, a mining engineer, at the sites of GÖZDE EREN Company.

On the first day of the seminar, our member Dr. Hakan KAHRAMAN delivered a four-hour presentation on the “Mining Cycle.” On the second day of the seminar, our Board Chairman presented on the topics of “circular economy, public communication, and governance.” Our member Fatma Zehra TOKER provided significant support in preparing the presentation. On the third day, our Board Chairman delivered a presentation on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) and Risk Management, prepared by our member Mr. Ergin KAHRAMAN. The other presentations of the day were delivered by Mr. Hüseyin TEKİN, CEO of ENCON Laboratories, on the topics of “Environmental Impacts and Minimization of Negative Effects” and “Water Use, Management, and Impacts, Including Acid Mine Drainage.” On the fourth day, our member, Dr. Kerem CANBAZOĞLU, a lawyer, discussed the legislation on “mine closure and post-mining” in Saudi Arabia, ICMM, Turkey, and other countries.

The second week of the seminar began on the sixth day with “Exploration, Communication, Education for Local Communities and Economic Gains for Local Communities,” followed by Prof. Dr. Abdülkerim YÖRÜKOĞLU on “Risks Encountered in Rehabilitation,” and Ercan YURTYERİ (ARGETEST) on “Selection of Laboratory and Analytical Methods, Metallurgical Test Studies, and PFD Design Specific to Mining Projects” and “Mineralogical and Petrographic Examination and Applications in Mining Projects.” On the 8th day, Day Dr. Ulvi Suphi URAL, “Land Preparation, Solid Waste and Stockpiling, Vegetation-Afforestation-Formation of Natural Habitat and Landscape Planning”, 9th and 10th Days Şahin ÖZDEMİR (MİTTO) “Closure” presentations were delivered.
