Professional Development
Professional Expertise:
Today, science and technology are advancing at a dizzying pace. A subject learned in school or in any course in our age loses its timeliness more quickly. Schools no longer only teach information, but how to access it. The information you think you can reach with the searches in the electronic environment, if you do not have the necessary infrastructure, can take you to very wrong or very old information.
When we looked at the development from the middle ages and then to this day, a scientist could be considered an expert in both medicine, biology, and physics. We can find dozens of examples of this in history. As science and technology develop, specialization becomes different, different professions begin to emerge. At the point where we are today, the phenomenon of distribution to different areas of expertise we see in medicine has emerged in almost all professions. To give an example from our own sector, mining engineering was first divided into schools that provided predominantly training in business and ore enrichment. Another step in this regard was for a university to separate Mineral Processing from Mineral Engineering as Mineral Processing Engineering. We have seen this in the field of geology and hydrogeology. It was later found that even in professions, different areas of expertise were formed. As an example, for mining engineers, not only the Mine Operator or the Ore-preparator, but also the specialties under them have become sought. It has become difficult to employ many years in the coal business in the metal or marble enterprises. It is even more different for geology. While the economic geology and other geology fields we call mining geology are separated more sharply than one, then search below it on a mineral basis, new areas of expertise have emerged, such as database management and resource estimation.
In other words, completing undergraduate education or even having done a graduate degree does not mean that Professional Development has completed, because professional development wants continuity.
Professional Development (MG):
Professional Development (MG) English equivalent to ‘’Professional Development (PD)’, is an independent, participation-based or interactive learning and application that we have gained through professional experiences, knowledge and skills sustaining, developing, and developing, refers to the monitoring and documentation process. This process helps us to continuously manage our own professional development, record what we have learned, review and reflect from time to time.
Concept of Professional Development (MG):
In English words, we need to look in detail at the meanings of ‘’education, training, development’’ words, which are also mixed together. ‘’Education’’, education-training, school, mektep, collection comes to mind. Although education; the individual starts from the moment of birth and continues throughout the life with the interaction of family, school and environment, it is taken as formal education that takes place in the planned programmed form and determined periods in the schools. For the word ‘’Training’, it is used; instruction, exercise, education, training, execution, innovation and experiences teaching-learning-application words. ‘’Development’’ means development, progress. The development covers formal and informal training, studies, learned innovations, experiences and a wide range of activities. It is used in a wider scope than learning in general. Because of this broad meaning, the word development is used.
Process of Professional Development (MG):
What does not change in the world is change itself. From the day the diploma is received in the ever-changing world, if one has not added anything to himself, it means that he is one day behind the world and change. As his career and business life develop, the knowledge and skills he needs will also increase. At this point, MG will lead the person in making progress in his professional life, helping him to continuously learn, apply and record the progress he has made in the world without being behind the world.
Professional Development (MG) Activities:
Undergraduate and postgraduate courses are of course the main foundations of Professional Development. Completion project presentation, graduate and doctoral presentations, real and actual internships performed during university education, finishing projects, research and reports for courses, taking part in R&D projects, participation seminars, seminars, to participate in presentations for conferences, congresses, master's degree and doctorate, to contribute to the workshop v.b. organzations, to contribute to the professional activities of professional organizations with the status of a student member, and, during university students will be one of the activities for Professional Development.
Phases such as doctorate, associate degree and professorship are the academic side of Professional Development. Courses given at this stage, projects carried out, publications made, congresses and symposiums held or presented in the organization, mentoring activities for students, etc, being a consultant at the doctoral and upper academic level are activities that come to mind at first. It is possible to add dozens of substances to it.
Many activities include Professional Development (MG)’. When it comes to MG, it should not come to mind to attend a single training or seminar. A foreign language learned, a project-business meeting attended by many experts, a professional publication read, a commission meeting we attended, mentoring, tasks undertaken in the relevant NGOs, written technical articles, information sharing with technical presentations will also be an example of professional development activity.
The necessity of professional development after formal education is accepted by all. As your need arises in the field you want to work in, many different courses such as computer courses, diction courses are on the agenda. In fact, even the driver's license course can be considered an indicator for Professional Development. Because nowadays it is very difficult to employ a professional who does not have a license and does not actively drive. Today, there is no area where the computer and, accordingly, office programs, geographic information systems applications and many different programs are not used. Learning these within the scope of professional development is another necessity.
Professional development is not limited to training received, master's degree paid, seminars and courses attended or offered free of charge. A published review article, article, booklet, a prepared brochure will also be an activity that indicates professional development. This does not necessarily have to be a journal registered in “Script index”s with a higher score of continuous professional development. For example, a journal that addresses the geosciences and mining sector or even an article that will be published in a popular journal on the subject will be part of professional development.
The practice of mentoring, which is widespread internationally, especially in developed countries, is one of the important and useful activities related to professional development. The way of the mining professional to the student or young professional (citizen candidate) who loves the profession and wants to do it should be considered as one of the activities that deserve the most points of Professional Development.
In working life, when it comes to professional development, it should not come to mind to attend an education, to go to a seminar. Even a business meeting, a professional magazine or book read, a commission meeting you attend will be an example of professional development activity. There are visuals explaining “professional development” activities in international norms.
The role of social life and hobbies in professional development, even hobbies of earth science professionals related to their profession or expertise, can be part of professional development. For example, as a hobby, photography, painting, trekking at mining sites, collecting semi-precious stones, or mining, geosciences, crystals, mineral stamps, mining-related objects, old photographs, etc, collecting documents, reading about this, researching, traveling for this, wandering the land for days, perhaps opening a small exhibition on this subject, he said, or it can be considered as part of the professional development of a professional who visits an exhibition on this subject and perhaps shares what he sees. Films and other performing arts, literary books and monographs on the subject of mining will also be part of it. Seeing the MTA and Zonguldak Mining Museums, being a visitor at the fair, seeing exhibitions, seeing historical mining sites should not only count as leisure entertainment, but also the time spent here is considered as part of continuous professional development.

Resume and Professional Development Documents:
The resume should clearly show that the professional is open to professional development and is constantly developing professionally.
It is an important visual document prepared in 2017 by the London Geological Association on Professional Development for the Earth sciences sector (’The Geological Society of London- 2017, The Mind Map of CPD activities). It was translated into Turkish by YERMAM and adapted to Turkey and printed as YERMAM SMG ACTIVITIES 2020 (mind map image). Although the activities shown here as SMG activities cover many activities, it is still possible to add to them. Each activity listed here contributes more or less to our professional development.
