Black Sea Metallogeny Workshop News
28 Nisan 2025The Black Sea Metallogeny Workshop was held on April 28, 2025, at Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa (İÜC) with the support of the General Directorate of Mining and Petroleum Affairs (MAPEG) at the University's Avcılar campus. The workshop was attended by Mr. Fatih PEKDEMİR, Deputy General Director of MAPEG, and Prof. Dr. İsmail İNCİ, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at İÜC. Mr. PEKDEMİR also delivered a speech on metallic mining and permits in the Black Sea region and the “Project for the Identification of Rehabilitated Mining Sites and Mining Social Responsibility Studies Across Turkey”
(TÜRMES).
The opening speeches were delivered by Mr. Ali EMİROĞLU, Deputy Chairman of the Foundation for the Development of Domestic Mining, and Prof. Dr. İsmail İNCİ, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at İÜC.
The workshop, moderated by Prof. Dr. Hüseyin ÖZTÜRK, Head of the Department of Geology Engineering at İÜC, began with presentations by Prof. Dr. Okan TÜYSÜZ (İTÜ) on “The Geology of the Western Pondits” and Prof. Dr. Gültekin TOPUZ (İTÜ) on “The Geology of the Eastern Pondits.”
In the second session, named after Dr. Yılmaz ALTUN, who has conducted extensive research on the subject, Dr. Yılmaz ALTUN (Etibakır) presented a paper titled “A General Overview of Massive Sulfide Deposits in the Pontides,” co-authored with Mr. Yavuz ULUTÜRK. The second presentation of the session was delivered by Prof. Dr. Emin ÇİFTÇİ (ITU) on the topic of “Temporal and Spatial Distribution of Volcanic Massive Sulfide (VMS) Deposits in the Eastern Pontid Belt and Their Differences from Similar Deposits Around the World.”
The afternoon session began with a presentation by Mr. PEKDEMİR titled “A General Overview of Mining Projects in the Black Sea Region,” which covered metallic mining and licenses in the region, followed by a presentation by Dr. Serdar KESKİN (MTA) on the same topic, focusing on the “Project to Identify Rehabilitated Mining Sites and Mining Social Responsibility Studies Across Turkey” (TÜRMES). Dr. Serdar KESKİN (MTA) then spoke on the same topic, discussing the formation environments, reserve status, and discoveries related to VMS, porphyry, and epithermal Au-Cu deposits discovered by MTA in the Eastern Black Sea region, as well as the sites transferred to MAPEG. A general summary of the latest scientific studies conducted in the region's mineral deposits was provided. The session continued with presentations by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kurtuluş GÜNAY (MTA) on “The Geology and Formation of the Central Pontid Copper Province” and Dr. Erde BİLİR (MSKÜ) on “Gold-Bearing VMS Deposits in the Eastern Pontids.”
The workshop concluded with the final session, which included presentations by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yılmaz DEMİR (RTEÜ) on “Veins-Type Pb-Zn Mineralization in the Black Sea Belt” and Prof. Dr. Hüseyin ÖZTÜRK on “Mining and Environmental Sensitivity in the Black Sea,” followed by the evaluation of the workshop.
