İSTANBUL'UN JEOLOJİSİ SEMPOZYUMU
14-15 ARALIK 2023In the Geology of Istanbul symposiums, the first of which was organized in 2003, various features of Istanbul, one of the world's leading metropolises, in the context of earth sciences were discussed and shared with the society and decision makers. After a long break after the 5th Symposium held in 2017, Geology of Istanbul Symposium-6 will be held on 14-15 December 2023 at Istanbul Kültür University Ataköy Campus, Akıngüç Auditorium and Art Center with the support of Istanbul Kültür University and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality in the 100th anniversary of our Republic.
The main theme of the Geology of Istanbul Symposium-6 is "A Sustainable Istanbul". Because "Sustainability" has a special importance in cities where human beings live densely. Both a series of problems brought about by a very dense social life and the processes related to meeting the various needs of the society challenge city administrators to manage their cities in a sustainable manner. Istanbul, the most popular city of our country in many respects, is also faced with the problem of "Sustainability" in many aspects. Issues such as the preservation and transfer of its unique cultural, natural, historical, geological and archaeological values to future generations, threats arising from its geological location such as earthquakes, the great need for building materials, the increasingly intensive use of underground space in the city, limited water resources, waste water and garbage management are serious challenges to a "Sustainability" prioritized city management. The 6th Symposium has been designed as a platform for discussing current developments on these issues and the following topics have been determined accordingly:
-The Role of Earth Sciences in Sustainability Studies
-Recent Developments in Istanbul's Geology
-Istanbul and Earthquake
-Engineering Geology and Geotechnics
-Urban Geology and Urban Transformation
-Environmental Geology, Changing Climate and Istanbul
-Geological Heritage and Cultural Geology
-Natural Building Materials and Resources
-Water Resources and Management
We invite all geoscientists as well as architects, engineers, urban planners, art historians, archaeologists and climate scientists to contribute to a clean, green and sustainable future with papers covering Istanbul and the surrounding provinces.
