COST ACTION PROJECT PROPOSAL
The COST ACTION (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) project, short name E-MiNet, is a 40-partner project involving 62 experts from universities, research centers and NGOs from 18 countries, including 17 COST Member States (38 countries in total as EU member and target countries) and 1 International Partner Country (USA), including the Association for Professional Development of Mining Engineers from Turkey.
The aim of the project proposal is to establish and implement a European Network of Post-Mining Regions addressing the advancement of sustainable development of post-mining, transition and mining regions across Europe and the world. The main theme is to strengthen development possibilities through partnership development and co-design approach through local partners in fields such as architecture, landscape, design, ecology, heritage, culture and social sciences. The main idea is to conduct on-the-ground experiments and studies with local stakeholders to "acclimatize" these regions to the challenges of the 21st century such as climate change, energy insecurity and to adapt them to the global low carbon economy and Just Transition.
In order to co-design development strategies for the material and socio-economic environment, workshops for local stakeholders and residents will be proposed, as well as inclusive and innovative forms of training for young students and those in PhD training and practitioners.
In these efforts, mining-related regions constitute a framework of opportunity. Their valued historical, social, cultural, technological and architectural qualities and ecological conditions create transitional spaces for post-mining uses. All of them are subject to a process of abandonment that threatens the 'landscape scars', their important heritage content and significance, as well as the memory of local people and heritage buildings.
Activities over the four years include: International and Local Workshops, Scientific and Technical Conferences and seminars, summer schools, technical trips, establishment of the European Network of Post-Mining Regions (E-MiNet), publication of articles and reports on the subject.
